However, achieving this dream can be challenging. The USCIS conducts a very thorough examination of every alien before granting U.S. citizenship. Even a minor criminal offense, or staying outside of the United States for too long, or prior visa problems (often long forgotten) can hinder an applicant from getting his or her U.S. citizenship.
On a basic level, you may be qualified for U.S. citizenship if you have been a permanent resident for at least five years (three years if married to a U.S. citizen), you can speak, write, and understand English, you are at least 18 years of age, and can pass the citizenship test.
